Enhancing Student Access to Free Learning Materials Through Course Marking

At a time of high textbook prices, how can academic institutions make their students better aware of what learning materials are being used in their courses and their costs? Is there an effective strategy to highlight courses that do not require purchasing textbooks to students who have difficulty affording them, giving them the opportunity to register in these courses and achieve greater learning success? This presentation discusses "Course marking", having courses with low or no cost textbooks highlighted in course registration and other systems familiar to students. Hear how the practice has been implemented in both individual institutions and in entire states, and the impact it is having on student grades. Led by veteran practitioners of course marking, the presentation also shares valuable insights on how institutions can implement this practice and assess its impact. It highlights two successful case studies of course marking in action, from an institution of higher learning in Texas and the Idaho State Board of Education.
